Our expert partner, Hela Sarana UK, recently returned from a trip to Peraliya, Sri Lanka where our October 2005 volunteer project took place. They said that the volunteers provided an injection of renewed enthusiasm and energy into the community. The children are all very eager to continue learning and practising their English following the fun games and lessons from the volunteers, and ten families have built their own home gardens based on the model home garden which the volunteers built. Hela Sarana has also administered its first micro credit loan to a co-op of woman, who now have a successful coir (rope) making business. We look forward to sharing more information about Peraliya and our ongoing investment into community development there.

Lauren Godfrey, who hails from New Zealand, recently joined the Tsunami Generation team to develop programme and partnerships. We welcome her on board and look forward to working with her to create some exciting and challenging programmes for 2007.

Our CEO Suzanne Gowler was recently invited to speak at the AGM of one of our expert partners, Hela Sarana. Suzanne confirmed Tsunami Generation’s commitment to support Hela Sarana and the Peraliya community and shared her hope that we will soon be able to return to Sri Lanka when the political situation becomes more stable again.

Tsunami Generation volunteers in action

Nine British volunteers have just returned from Sri Lanka having successfully converted their donation into action in Sri Lanka.
In just two weeks, the volunteers for Tsunami Generation's pilot project have cleared derelict ground to create a new community garden in Peraliya. Devastated by the Tsunami, the focus had been on reconstruction work, but in an area where vegetables are not traditionally grown, rubbish was cleared, much digging and fencing done, and king coconuts and banana trees planted alongside rows of tomatoes, chillies, okra and beans.
The vegetables grown will be shared amongst local families, and the garden used as a future resource to encourage families to grow their own veg and to supply them with seed. Working in partnership with UK charity Hela Sarana, which is supporting long term community development in the area, the volunteers also formed a painting task force to finish off newly constructed homes and raised the spirits of 35 local children by running English, games and arts activities after-school.

Volunteers take off for Sri Lanka
The first team of Tsunami Generation volunteers started work in a community on the south west coast of Sri Lanka this week.
In partnership with UK charity Hela Sarana, which is working to support long term community development in the area, the volunteers are spending two weeks in Peraliya helping with housing reconstruction work, creating a community garden and participating in after-school activities with local children.
Money raised by the volunteers on this pilot project is being invested in providing resources for the local community, enabling them to see the benefits of their donation in action.
